Its inventor was Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner, a German chemist also known for his contribution to the periodic table of elements, who designed the Döbereiner lamp in 1823. It is a glass container inside which, through the chemical reaction between zinc and sulfuric acid, a certain quantity of hydrogen gas is created which, released through a valve, allows a flame to be lit once in contact with a platinum filament. In 1827 matches then became widespread, which being small wooden sticks were much cheaper and easier to use and design, it was enough to rub them on the ground to catch fire.
It was then the Englishman John Walker who worked on a mixture which then led to the definitive creation of lighters. The first appeared in the 20th century, defined as the first pocket models consisting of a small flint placed on top of a small metal cylinder filled with combustible gas. In the 1920s there was a boom in lighters, also due to their attractive designs as well as their practicality.

In 1933 George Grant Blaisdell, an American designer, created a lighter that was comfortable to use in any weather condition. It was equipped with a zip closure that was easy to open with a snap of the fingers, defined as "flip flop opening", it also had a small metal cage necessary to protect the fire from the wind. George Grant Blaisdell was the inventor of the Zippo windproof lighter, a name deriving from the manufacturing company and known as one of the best-selling models of all time.
In 1973, Bic's "disposable" models appeared for the first time, colorful and super cheap plastic products. Furthermore, they were powered by LPG rather than petrol and it was possible to regulate the intensity of the flame.
However, "disposable" lighters have not made refillable lighters disappear, dating back to 1972, when the Flamagas company (a Spanish group founded in 1959) created the very famous and well-known Clipper, with an extravagant and fun design. Flamagas, in fact, in addition to focusing on design and cylindrical shape, focuses on refillable.
