Everything you need to know about Pipes

The first pipes were used by Amerindian populations, only in the 16th century did they also appear in Europe and in particular, in England, where the first pipes were produced in plaster, "clay pipes". There was also a differentiation between the popular classes who smoked the so-called small straight pipes and the wealthy classes who instead used the long fragile pipes.

During the eighteenth century, other types of materials were then experimented for the creation of pipes which made it possible to resolve some inconveniences such as the possibility of the object burning or being ruined to the point of making it impossible to use. Solutions such as magnesium silicate, also known as foam, are starting to be used.

Today the pipe is considered an object not only of luxury, but above all of value regardless of its primary function as a smoking tool. You can also buy pipes online.

The different types of pipes

The best-known pipe models are around twelve, among these:

  1. The classic straight pipe, with a linear and practical shape, medium size, excellent for beginners. The characteristic of this pipe is that it can have different types of mouthpiece which can be smooth or saddle-shaped, the joint with the metal ring nut or the so-called stove or hearth.
  2. The classic curve is a "slender" pipe with a mouthpiece that is almost parallel to the bowl.
  3. The square. The name refers to the pipe, the head of the pipe seems to have the shape of a "decapitated" egg and its mouthpiece is defined as a saddle. Also known as a sports pipe.
  4. The bottle. The main feature of this pipe is the spherical head.
  5. The curved square. Model that lends itself to many variations and is very similar to the classic straight pipe, the only difference is that it has a lower head.
  6. The handset has a semi-curved shape, it resembles a handset and is also suitable for young people due to its particular design.
  7. The Dublin has the peculiarity of the head tilted forward which gives it impetus and elegance.
  8. The wales, similar to the bowl pipe but more slender and with a lower head. Little curiosity, its name derives from the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII.
  9. The lovat, with its longer stem and short, saddle-shaped mouthpiece, is compared to the classic straight pipe.
  10. The oval is defined as the pocket pipe, but at the same time the least known.
  11. The Canadian is characterized by its long stem. Despite being defined as the bulkiest, it is at the same time the one that best preserves the smoke as it promotes the absorption of humidity.
  12. The Pot. Defined as the daughter of the classic straight pipe. However, it has a low, broad head and thicker walls.

The main materials used for the construction of pipes

The ones listed are just some of the types of pipes that exist in the world. Obviously the different models also vary depending on the material with which they are produced and depending on the shape. There are:

  • Chalk pipes, which as previously mentioned, became widespread around the 17th century. Much in demand among sailors as they are very economical and today in great demand as they are rare. They are also known as the "genovesine".
  • Foam pipe. The foam would be the mineral magnesium silicate found mainly in Türkiye. The main characteristic of this element, in addition to its porosity, is that it does not affect the taste of the smoke.
  • Briar pipe is the best known pipe in the world. The material with which it is made is tree heather, an evergreen shrub, mainly widespread in the Mediterranean basin.
  • Terracotta pipe, particularly widespread among the fishermen of Chioggia.
  • Corncob pipe. Very cheap pipe and as can be deduced from the name it is made with corn cob which can only be found in Missouri.
  • Sa Pipa allutonada is the pipe used by Sardinian shepherds. It differs from the others for its rough workmanship but also for the burner which is often very close to the torch.
  • Falcon pipe capable of cooling into smoke by condensing the vapor which favors the formation of drizzle.
  • Calabash or Calebassa pipe. Characterized by the composition of different materials, among these the exotic pumpkin or Caravazza which allows the shape of a condensation chamber which favors the cooling of the smoke which is sweet and fresh.
  • Dead pipe or Bog Oak made from oak, has the peculiarity of being very light.
  • Olive tree pipe, as can be deduced from the material with which it is made, has a light color and gives a sweetish flavor when smoked.
  • Japanese Kiserus pipes are very thin pipes made up of three parts: metal bowl, wooden stem also called Kiseru-jutsu and mouthpiece also made of metal.

How to smoke a pipe: 5 instructions to follow

There are 5 steps to follow to make the best use of the pipe.

  1. First you need to load the tobacco, which must be melted and with the right level of humidity. You need to deposit some on the bottom of the stove and the rest needs to be lightly pressed. The charge must be accurate to obtain a good draw, that is, the pipe must be prevented from burning and the tongue from burning and, most importantly, humidity must be prevented from forming. It is also necessary to level the surface of the tobacco and eliminate the excess.
  2. Second step is to uniformly light the surface by gently vacuuming frequently. The first lighting will make the tobacco rise but just press with a tamper and, as we said before, level the surface and light again.
  3. Smoking a pipe is like slow dancing. The puffs must be calm, spaced, rhythmic and slow. Quite the opposite of what you do with a cigarette. Every now and then you will have to press the tobacco to re-establish the optimal draw and every now and then you will have to light it again because the pipe goes out. If you prefer, you can remove the ash before relighting the pipe, the only thing to do is turn it upside down.
  4. Fundamentally, pipe smoke is not inhaled, but savored, enjoyed.
  5. Once finished, the pipe must be cleaned delicately by emptying the bowl using a pipe cleaner which helps eliminate ash and tobacco residues. Never hit the pipe on a hard surface. Then clean the mouthpiece with the pipe cleaner by blowing from time to time without opening the pipe.

This way you will always have your pipe clean and ready for the next use.
