THC: one of the most relevant molecules in the hemp plant next to CBD.
The literal meaning of the acronym THC is tetracannabidiol, known for its psychoactive properties; furthermore, THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the active ingredients present in cannabis sativa.
THC is the main responsible for the psychological and psychoactive effects caused by the intake of cannabis sativa. This is because delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol acts directly on cannabinoid receptors present in the human body, in particular, in the areas of the brain.
Tetracannabidiol has a chemical structure that allows it to interact with the C1 and C2 receptors, decreasing the effects of the psychoactive compounds present in the cannabis plant. In doing so, THC, if used in the right way, can influence many moments of daily life, variable and subjective moments.
In fact, THC has euphoric effects, very useful against nausea. It has anti-emetic and anti-kinetic actions and is considered an important aid in stimulating appetite, as well as reducing eye pressure and controlling aggression.
This molecule is mainly known as a pinkish glassy crystalline solid if placed in pure form and at reduced temperatures, but if placed at high temperatures its condition changes, becoming a viscous and sticky compound. The preparations on the market, however, all come in the form of oils, oily liquids that have a characteristic yellow/brown colour.
Difference between THC and CBD
THC and CBD are two of the main cannabinoids in cannabis, but they have different effects on the human body.
Tetracannabinol and cannabidiol, if isolated, can produce opposite effects on the human organism.
THC is in fact the main responsible for the psychoactive effect of cannabis which causes increased appetite or effects on short-term memory. CBD has reactions similar to the side effects caused by medicines. It is often used for panic attacks, anxiety and other psychoses such as paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, etc.
Over the years, several studies have been carried out, both regarding CBD which is currently used for degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or epilepsy, and on the effects of THC used for medical purposes with positive effects on patients with HIV. However, excessive use makes its consumption illegal in most of the world. The intake of THC is considered legal if the 0.2% considered as the maximum limit according to law 242/2016 is not exceeded.
THC and CBD are natural cannabinoids both capable of stimulating our body although in completely different and opposite ways. Both stimulate the endocannabinoid system by interacting with different receptors. While THC affects the CB1 and CB2 receptors by stimulating the sensation of pleasure and appetite, CBD affects other receptors, thus reducing anxiety and acting positively on memory.
To date, THC and CBD, although found in the same plant, can only be consumed if isolated in a laboratory. There are different types of light cannabis on the market containing a low THC content and a high CBD content, from oils to inflorescences to herbal teas.
THC is used to soothe some symptoms linked to muscle spasms, insomnia, glaucoma, poor appetite and, like CBD, it is also used to treat convulsions, pain due to inflammation, psychosis and mental disorders.
What is THC used for: effects and contraindications
THC produces various beneficial and therapeutic effects especially related to pain therapy and therefore to serious pathologies. It is effective in the treatment of muscle spasms typical of multiple sclerosis, in the treatment of depression, convulsions, sleep disorders, loss of appetite or in relieving disorders caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Many scientific studies have also confirmed the thesis according to which the use of THC in the treatment of pathologies such as HIV and anorexia has incredible results. Nonetheless, the combination of the active ingredient THC and alcohol causes a strange synergy that has a completely negative impact on everyday life. Consequently, the incorrect use of THC can cause a harmful and deleterious result, on the contrary if used with the appropriate precautions and with the right doses it can establish significant effects for the human body.
There are also contraindications deriving from the intake of THC, among the most frequent:
- The increase in heart rate
- Loss of concentration
- Anxiety attacks
- Short-term memory loss
- The alteration of movements
It must be emphasized, however, that THC could cause these contraindications but that it does not cause death. Indeed, THC is a cannabinoid that stimulates the human brain, bringing exceptional benefits if used with caution.
How THC is used
Given the results obtained from numerous scientific research carried out over the years, THC is used in the medical sector to alleviate many pathologies, such as:
- Sclerosis
- Tourette's syndrome
- Various disorders caused by diseases such as HIV.
The various studies carried out have also underlined the fact that THC does not cause fatal outcomes, but it has not yet been established what it can do to the human body in the long term. It is certain, however, that THC has a positive effect on the human brain, defending it from stress and inflammation if used in the right doses. It has also been proven that THC stimulates the creation and increase of nerve cells in the process of neurogenesis (process of formation of nerve cells) if a maximum limit of 0.2% is used as established by the legal limits 242/2016.
