CBD as a natural and effective neuroprotector: scientific studies

At the center of today's scientific research, there are more and more studies that confirm the numerous therapeutic properties of CBD. In particular, his neuroprotective effects on the brain.

In fact, cannabidiol can limit the production of free radicals and prevent them aging of brain cells, and, thanks to the anti-inflammatory effect exerted on neurons, protect them from damage, degeneration or malfunction. Finally, protect the brain from neurodegenerative conditions related to age or pathologies such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

The neuroprotective effects of CBD on the brain

The first study which highlighted the neuroprotective effects of CBD dates back to 1998, when, by exposing primary cultures of cortical neurons to toxic concentrations of the neurotransmitter glutamate for 10 minutes, it was discovered that CBD prevented both neurotoxicity that the cell death caused by oxidative stress.

Two recent scientific studies arrived at similar results which studied the potential of cannabidiol to treat the Parkinson, i.e. that CBD acts as a neuroprotector in neurons, reducing neurotoxicity.

"Our findings collectively provide new evidence that CBD works as neuroprotector in dopaminergic neurons, reducing neurotoxicity and the accumulation of α-synuclein (a protein that plays a fundamental role in the onset and progression of some neurodegenerative diseases)", state the researchers in a publication on Neurochemical Research.

Likewise, in one review on Frontiers in Pharmacology, scholars confirmed: “The bibliographic evidence shown in the present review suggests the usefulness clinical trial of CBD for the treatment of both L-DOPA dyskinesias and motor symptoms of Parkinson's, as well as the neuromodulatory, neuroprotective, and antidyskinetic effects of CBD in animal models."

CBD protects the nervous system and fights free radicals

Thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory action, CBD protects the nervous system fromchronic inflammation. In fact, given its antioxidant effects and ability to slow down the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, cannabidiol reduces inflammation in the body, decreasing the local immune response. And as demonstrated by several scientific studies, CBD protects brain cells from apoptosis or cell death due to inflammation, reducing cellular stress.

Furthermore, as explained by one 2020 review, CBD can interrupt the action of free radicals by capturing or transforming them into less harmful radicals, and, as one suggested 2022 study, it can even reduce its production.
