CBD

What is CBD?

CBD is a metabolite that belongs to the cannabinoid group, specifically it is a molecule that interacts with receptors present in the body and helps them normalize biological processes such as memory, hunger, anxiety, sleep and much more.

Differences between CBD and THC

The origins of CBD date back to 2700 BC. in which it was mainly used for medical purposes. Natural remedy whose active ingredient, by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, is able to relax the body from stress unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, another main cannabinoid). THC, on the other hand, causes alterations in the human mind, leading to a psychoactive reaction. Although THC and CBD are active ingredients with a very similar chemical structure and present in large quantities both in the flowers and in the entire cannabis plant, the two cannabinoids have completely different effects once they enter the body. Regarding the effects of THC they can lead to:

  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Cognitive problems
  • Mental and muscular relaxation
  • Slow reaction times
  • Munchies
  • Increased heart rate
  • Alteration of time and space
  • Dry mouth
  • Impairment of motor skills
  • Increased sensory perception
  • Euphoria

Over the years, researchers have in fact stated that CBD, unlike THC, interacts positively on the body, even though it has mainly been tested on animals. As far as humans are concerned, there is little research but it gives rise to hope. This explains why, to date, CBD is still not considered a purely therapeutic compound despite being absolutely LEGAL.

That's right, CBD is legal in Italy and throughout the European Union!

What is CBD used for: Benefits and Contraindications

CBD benefits

Over the years, CBD has acquired great importance in the medical field, especially in the USA and, albeit somewhat slowly, in Europe. It is also starting to catch on in Italy where it is accredited not only as a recognized and legalized product, but also appreciated for its beneficial qualities.

Some of these properties of CBD are supported by scientific research which highlights the main characteristic of bringing well-being in a natural way, they can be recognised:

  • Properties analgesic e anti-inflammatory, with its action on the ECS (endocannabinoid system) reduces the perception of pain by stimulating the body in different areas and promoting neurological benefits.
  • Properties anxiolytic, CBD has been shown to relieve the symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
  • Properties neuro-protective, the anti-inflammatory power of this cannabidiol allows the reduction of stress that can affect brain cells.
  • Properties antipsychotics, some research supports the use of CBD for the treatment of schizophrenia and other mental health disorders.
  • Properties antiemetic, CBD oil seems to be suitable for reducing this disorder by effectively treating the symptoms.
  • Properties anticonvulsants, this molecule, according to important scientific research, could be used in therapies that treat forms of epilepsy such as childhood epilepsy.
  • Properties energizing e antioxidant, thanks to its detoxifying action and strengthening cells with correct regeneration, CBD oil as well as CBD crystals seem to have an energizing and also antioxidant characteristic.

All these properties and characteristics make CBD usable in the treatment of many diseases and identify it as a painkiller. Alongside its therapeutic uses, in some countries, CBD is also recommended as a food supplement.

In reference to the contraindications of CBD, in 2018 the WHO (World Health Organization) published a report in which it highlighted the fact that there are, in general, no risky effects and contraindications for human health, but rather medical applications. Consequently there are contraindications that may occur in relation to therapeutic doses such as:

  • Feeling of fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased appetite

Once the CBD dosage is changed these effects disappear.

The types of CBD on the market

CBD uses

Different types of CBD can be found on the market depending on the different ways of intake. Among these:

  • CBD oil or cannabis oil or hemp oil. Extracted in the form of oil and then combined with other oils, such as coconut or hemp seed oil, this allows for easy absorption. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, arthritis or insomnia, concentrated CBD oil seems to work better than plain hemp oil.
  • CBD Beauty: lotions and creams. CBD creams and lotions contain a very small amount of water and basic hydrating agents and are mainly used to relieve inflammation or pain on a topical level.
  • Infusions. CBD tea is obtained by infusing hemp leaves and buds in hot water. The flavor appears unpleasant and for this reason it is mixed with other herbs. It is suggested to also add two tablespoons of milk to improve the flavor.
  • Crystals. This is a pure cannabidiol extract, 99% purity. This raw extract is obtained from the hemp plant and contains many of the plant's components, from CBD to other cannabinoids.
  • Band-Aids, slowly release controlled amounts of CBD into the bloodstream through the skin.
  • Flowers. CBD varieties have been created that produce inflorescences with a low THC content but with a high yield of cannabidiol.
  • Capsules, it is basically pure CBD and can be used for both food and therapeutic purposes.

However, the safest and most versatile way to take CBD is oil. Studies on humans have not yet established a suitable daily quantity for intake, but experts recommend a small dosage which will then be increased until the desired effect is achieved.

CBD for veterinary use

CBD, also known as hemp oil, is gaining more and more relevance in the field of veterinary medicine.

Some studies have been carried out which highlight the fact that in the veterinary field CBD oil can be used in the treatment of epilepsies and osteoarthritis, but also for:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Dermatitis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Neurological diseases
  • Neuritis

As regards administration, it is also advisable to dispense it away from other drugs and meals (at least 2 hours) and to ensure that the pet takes it without problems, it is advisable to administer it with a very small portion of food. The first effects will be evident after 4/5 days.
