Switzerland, experimental cannabis legalization

Lukas Engelberger, head of the Basel Department of Health, announced that 370 adult cannabis users living in the canton will be able to purchase marijuana in nine pharmacies in the city.

Four types of inflorescences and two of hashish will be available and the costs, which will be based on the black market and will burden the participants, will vary from 8 to 12 francs per gram.

Furthermore, the products sold must satisfy rigorous quality standards, come from organic farming and do not contain any trace of impurities harmful to health.

Experimental legalization: how and why it was born

As reported by theFOPH (Federal Office of Public Health), an amendment to the Narcotics Act came into force on 15 May 2021 which allows pilot experiments with controlled dispensing of hemp for non-medical purposes.

Although it is prohibited to grow, import or sell cannabis in Switzerland, consumption is widespread, the black market thrives and consumer safety is not guaranteed. Reasons why Parliament, by amending the current law on narcotics, wants to evaluate the effects of a consumption regulation of hemp.

The goal? Acquire greater experience and knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of controlled dispensing, which act as a proven scientific basis for a future legal regulation and possible regulation of consumption.
