USA | Cannabis referendums pass in 2 out of 5 states

On Tuesday 8 November, on the occasion of the mid-term elections, the citizens of 5 American states were called to the polls to vote i referendum for them legalization of cannabis.

We anticipate that only 2 of 5 referendums have passed, in particular Maryland and the Missouri they join the list of American states that have legalized cannabis for recreational as well as therapeutic use.

Maryland

In Maryland, cannabis wins with 66% of votes in favor. The referendum is going to change the Constitution of the State with Article XX, which permits the possession and consumption of cannabis for adults 21 years of age and older.

The law, which will come into force from July 1, 2023, will allow the possession of up to 1.5 ounces of buds, 10 grams of concentrates and the cultivation of two plants per person. Furthermore, people with convictions related to cannabis, they will be released if the crime committed has been made legal by the new law.

According to the new amendment, theMaryland General Assembly shall "provide for the use, distribution, possession, regulation and taxation of cannabis within the State".

Missouri

With Missouri, the number of American states that have legalized cannabis for personal use rises to 21. The referendum just passed legalize the production, sale, possession and consumption for adult use.

Additionally, the amendment allows anyone who has been convicted of a non-violent crime related to cannabis to be released. Introduces a tax on cannabis by 6%, which will be allocated for finance health care of veterans, pharmacological treatments and the public defense system.

Finally, residents, provided they register with the State as farmers, they will be able to cultivate up to six flowering plants, six non-flowering plants and six clones.

Arkansas, North Dakota and South Dakota

Nothing to be done for Arkansas (56% No – 44% Yes), North Dakota (55% No – 45% Yes) and South Dakota (53% No – 47% Yes). The electoral outcome, as expected due to the awareness campaigns that began recently, it wasn't favorable to legalization.
