Is overcoming the legal barriers of cannabis and extending the uses of CBD possible? Yes. Thanks to the discovery of one native plant of Brazil that produces exclusively CBD without any trace of THC.

Trema micrantha blume: the Brazilian plant that produces only CBD

From what was discovered by researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the plant called Trema micrantha blume It belongs to the Cannabaceae family and, surprisingly, produces CBD in fruits and flowers such as single cannabinoid.

Peculiarity it brings Rodrigo Soares Moura Neto, research coordinator of the Institute of Biology (IB) of the UFRJ, to declare that this plant "can extend the use of cannabidiol (CBD) for medicinal purposes without legal barriers".

As reported from Cannareporter, Moura Neto explained that when CBD is sold, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) imposes restrictions on the formula, which can only have 0.2% THC.

"In the case of this native plant, this would not be a problem, because does not contain THC. There would also be no legal restrictions on cultivation, because you can plant as you like. In fact, it is already widespread throughout Brazil and would be an easier and cheaper source for obtaining CBD,” highlighted Moura Neto.

Funded with 500,000 Brazilian reais (around 95,000 euros), "chemists, biologists, geneticists and botanists are studying the most effective methods to analyze and extract cannabidiol from the plant". According to the professor, in vitro processes will begin in a maximum of six months to understand if the component has merit the same activities and properties of cannabidiol extracted from Cannabis Sativa.

The "new cannabis" that produces dozens of cannabinoids

Meanwhile, a team of international researchers recently discovered a flowering plant from South Africa which produces over 40 cannabinoids: thewoolly umbrella, most of which are unknown and have possible new therapeutic properties.

The research published in the scientific journal Nature Plants, attests that although they are missing among the cannabinoids produced CBD and THC, relatively high concentrations of CBG or cannabigerol. Chemical compound with important therapeutic qualities and precursor of all other cannabinoids.

Even more important, however, is that unlike cannabis, whose cannabinoids are produced by trichomes which mainly cover its inflorescences, the cannabinoids of the woolly umbrella are collected in the trichomes abundantly present on the leaves.

A gift that presents the woolly umbrella as a potential "perennial, fast-growing and commercially viable vegetable source valid for bioactive cannabinoids".
