What is gastroesophageal reflux (and why is it so annoying)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is characterized by the rise of acidic contents from the stomach into the esophagus: the "tube" that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
And the symptoms of this disorder, which we will see shortly, are not limited to simple annoyance. But they can compromise our quality of life. Reducing the appetite and "ruining" the pleasure of eating.
Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux
Burning in the pit of the stomach e acid regurgitation, that is, that perception of bitterness and acidity that can reach the mouth.
These are the symptoms classics of gastroesophageal reflux, which in some cases can be accompanied by:
- nausea
- difficulty swallowing
- sob
- lowering of the voice
- sore throat
- chest pain and others
But what is it? the cause underlying this disease? Let's try to explain it in the simplest way possible.
Gastroesophageal reflux: the causes (you need to know) to feel better
Between the esophagus and the stomach there is a small structure, called lower esophageal sphincter, which regulates the passage of material between these two organs.
This muscular ring "opens" when we swallow, to allow food to reach the stomach. And it "closes" immediately afterwards to prevent gastric acids to rise.
From here we understand that, in people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux, the sphincter appears to be relaxed. And it allows the rise of gastric acids from the stomach to the esophagus. Causing all the above symptoms.
There are several factors (which we must know and control) which can increase the risk to develop gastroesophageal reflux. Which ones:
- obesity and overweight
- smoking and alcohol
- fatty foods
- other foods to avoid (which we will see in the next paragraph)
- stress
- the use of drugs
How gastroesophageal reflux is (usually) treated

There are two paths to take when you want to treat gastroesophageal reflux, the first concerns your own lifestyle. And the second, only when the disorder persists, dei drugs.
Lifestyle (which can make the difference)
As anticipated, reevaluating your lifestyle and eating habits can really help. Among them practices more effective would be:
- quit smoking
- lose weight if you are overweight and maintain your ideal weight
- avoid going to bed immediately after meals, but wait a couple of hours
- eat lighter meals and, above all, pay a lot pay attention to nutrition, avoiding (or at least limiting to a minimum) foods that can encourage reflux, such as:
- coffee and alcohol
- fatty and fried foods
- chocolate, carbonated drinks, kiwis, tomatoes
- foods that are too hot and spicy (except turmeric and ginger which, however, can reduce reflux symptoms)
- avoid situations that are sources of stress
Drug therapy
However, following these guidelines to the letter is not always easy. So, in case the symptoms do not improve, we can opt for gods drugs specific:
- antacids
- proton pump inhibitors, which block the production of acid in the stomach
- prokinetics
However, taking medicines not only does not guarantee the desired results, but in the long run it could even cause problems adverse effects.
And that's where it comes in CBD: natural, safe and tolerated by the body. Besides being free of side effects.
Stopping gastroesophageal reflux with CBD: scientific confirmation

To understand how CBD can treat gastroesophageal reflux we must first introduce the endocannabinoid system, composed of endocannabinoids, CB1 and CB2 receptors and enzymes.
Without going into detail, we can say that cannabis molecules, such as CBD and THC, they interact with the endocannabinoid system. As?
By binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout our bodies, including the gastrointestinal tract.
Starting from this awareness, scientific studies have examined (and confirmed) the beneficial effects of cannabinoids in treating disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract, including gastroesophageal reflux.
In particular:
- CBD has antiemetic properties, i.e. it can muffle the symptoms of nausea and vomiting
- can reduce the secretion of gastric acids, and therefore limit their ascent along the esophagus
- from the effects anti-inflammatories and analgesics, widely confirmed by scientific research, can act directly on inflammation and pain
