NBA: cannabis removed from prohibited substances

The decision made by NBA commissioner Adam Silver was pushed by the two-time champion Kevin Durant: among the biggest supporters of cannabis among players still active on the field.

“I actually called him and asked him to take marijuana off the list of banned substances. It has no negative effects on you - explained the NBA star - I just thought that it was becoming a topic across the country and around the world, and that the stigma wasn't as bad as it was before. I just felt like the time had come."

In fact, although marijuana is said to burn in the locker room from decades, the athletes, in order to avoid fines or suspensions, have always kept a low profile. At least until several states in the USA began to legalize cannabis, both for medical and recreational use.

When asked how the meeting between him and the commissioner went, Durant said that Silver had understood from the beginning what he was going to ask him. "When we met to discuss it, Silver smelled it on me, so there wasn't a need for many words, it was all understood. It's the NBA. Everyone does it to be honest. It's like wine."
