CBD oil and joint pain

What is meant by joint pain

According to the Mayo Clinic, joint pain can be “discomfort, pain, or inflammation arising from any part of a joint.” A condition as widespread as underestimated which instead must be treated appropriately.

In fact, according to estimates of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal we find that in the United States alone there are approximately 91 million people suffering from joint pain or some form of arthritis, including 61 million aged between 18 and 64.

Even in Italy this condition involves a good portion of the population, around 12.1%, i.e. more than 5 million people.

However, a lot of confusion arises when trying to pinpoint the source of the pain, which sometimes actually comes from external structures to joints, such as ligaments, muscles and tendons.

For atralgia instead it indicates the pain that derives from the actual joint, which sometimes, but not always, is accompanied by joint inflammation also known as arthritis.

The different types of joint pain

Joint pain can be classified into acute or chronic.

The former are characterized by atemporary inflammation often caused by prolonged effort, a period of overfatigue or by sporting activity, such as hiking in the mountains or constantly lifting weights.

However, acute joint pain can worsen and become chronic when it is neglected not treated correctly. In particular, chronic joint pain can persist over time and, being a painful condition, can compromise the quality of life of those who suffer from it.

There are over 100 different types of joint-related diseases and chronic conditions. Le more common include:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Gout

  • Musculoskeletal pain

  • Conditions of the back and spine

Each of these develops differently and affects joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles separately, making the treatment particularly specific to the conditions of the individual.

Joint pain: how they are (generally) treated

Just as joint pain can vary greatly from one patient to another, the preferred therapies are also decidedly flexible. Among the treatments available for acute pain are:

  • drugs such as paracetamol, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • low impact physical exercises such as yoga which strengthens and protects the joints
  • control of weight corporeal
  • the application of ice or ointments painkillers

For chronic pain, however, "heavier" drugs such as opioids, which however can generate addiction and often cause uncomfortable side effects, such as:

  • drowsiness
  • mental confusion
  • tiredness
  • nausea and vomiting

In contrast, CBD oil is a product safe and well tolerated, which is not addictive and it has no side effects.

In fact, therapeutic cannabis is on the global scene replacing other drugs increasingly, tackling the "opioid epidemic" which, for example, in the United States causes thousands of deaths every year.

There is one to confirm it study led by researchers fromAarhus University and published onHarm Reduction Journal.

From the anonymous survey, conducted on 2,841 respondents over 18, it was found that cannabis is used in particular to treat the chronic pain and that painkillers (67.2%), antidepressants (24.5%) and arthritis medications (20.7%) are the most substituted types of medications.

Finally, it was discovered that the most common method of administration isCBD oil (65.2%) and that more than half (65.8%) confirmed that cannabis-based therapies have proven much more effective compared to prescription drugs.

CBD oil for joint pain relief

CBD has important scientifically recognized analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, there are several studies that investigate the beneficial effects of CBD on specific joint conditions such as neuropathic pain, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis rather than the broad field of joint pain in general.

On theEuropean Journal of Pain a study conducted on animals was published with promising but preliminary results, which demonstrated that CBD applied to the skin can help reduce pain and inflammation due to arthritis.

And again, one study of 2016 found that atopical application of CBD in arthritic rats reduced joint swelling and inflammatory responses without negative side effects.

Finally, one study of 2017 carried out on osteoarthritic rats evaluated the potential of CBD in the alleviate the pain, inflammation and neuropathic joint pain.

Researchers confirmed that CBD helped reduce joint inflammation, increase tolerance thresholds, and prevent the development of joint pain, concluding that CBD could act as a treatment prophylactic, or preventive with respect to the manifestation of the pathology.

CBD and joint pain: the benefits for athletes

In addition to the studies, several positive testimonies come directly from world of sport, where CBD, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and analgesic effects, has proven to be a valid ally of athletes.

Among these we find that of the MMA champion Nate Diaz, who at the end of a meeting showed up at a press conference vaping CBD, claiming that "helps the healing process, inflammation and everything else. So I smoke before, after the match and during training."
