The hens that lay the "golden eggs" are fed hemp seeds

The chickens from golden eggs they exist. Larger eggs, rich in omega 3 and omega 6. The secret? Enrich the feed with hemp seeds in abundance.

I hemp seeds I'm a super food for us and for our animals. Starting from the granivorous birds that literally go crazy for it. From canaries, serial eaters par excellence, to chickens.

"The novelty of our production was adding hemp seeds to the chickens' feed, making it rich in omega 3 and omega 6 - says Silvia O. - This is how the organic project was born "The egg and the hemp". But let's go step by step.

This story has roots in distant times. From an old chicken coop and the desire to pass on a family tradition from generation to generation. From the passion of Silvia, founder of the small family-run farm in Massa D'Albe.

"Our adventure began in May 2014 when my mother and I managed to win a European tender which allowed us to realize the dream of give life back to family lands abandoned for two generations."

Hemp seeds as feed for laying hens

So Silvia, armed with a lot of passion, built the first three chicken coops. Chicken coops that will be the home of his laying hens Livorno. Chickens reared organically and fed on hemp seeds.

The incredible ones properties of eggs produced by the hens of Silvia's organic farm have been verified by theTeramo Zooprophylactic Institute.

"It was an experiment that lasted six months - explains the owner of the company - during which the Zooprophylactic Institute analyzed the eggs of three groups of hens, respectively fed with hemp seeds, linseeds and cereals of all types."

"The eggs from hemp-fed chickens were larger and heavier of the others but also much richer in omega 3 fats".

The results of the experiments

With the same comparison, the analyzes recorded average concentrations of 0.194 g/100g of omega 3, against 0.04 g/100g and of 1,633 g/100g of omega 6 against 1.06 g/100g compared to conventional eggs. And not only that.

Also note the increase in polyunsaturated fats, 1.83 versus 1.26 and the reduction of total fat, 7.07 against 8.7 and calories, 114 Kcal/100g against 128.

Egg nutritional values

A year and a half later the same investigations were repeated by the CRAB of Avezzano, a food analysis laboratory, integrating hemp seeds in the diet normally used on the farm for laying hens and chickens.

"A group of hens and a group of chickens were fed the 'standard' diet, while a two experimental groups hemp seeds were added to the normal diet", says Daniela Maria Spena, director of CRAB.

"From the nutritional analysis of eggs laid by laying hens fed a diet supplemented with hemp seeds, compared with standard ones, they highlighted notable differences in the composition of fatty acids"

And he continues: "Saturated fatty acids decrease and polyunsaturated fatty acids increase. In particular, the content of essential polyunsaturated fats, such as omega 3 and omega 6 increase more than double in eggs from hens fed hemp seeds, compared to the control group."

Conclusions: The hemp eggs they beat the traditional ones 10 to 0. But we're not just talking about eggs. These discoveries are a new piece in support of this plant, demonized for too long, and its innumerable beneficial sounds.
