The Meloni government's crusade against cannabis continues. In fact, after the law presented last October, Fratelli d'Italia continues undaunted on the path of prohibition, with a new law that would ban light cannabis for recreational use.

Law to ban cannabis light in Italy

The new law to ban light cannabis in Italy

The promoters of the new proposed law, which sees the Fdl senator as the first signatory Antonio Iannone, have recognized the absence of any psychotropic effect of light cannabis, however, according to Melonians, "this business brings many people closer to marijuana". Better to get supplies from the black market, I add.

In any case, the anti-hemp bill consists of only two articles: the first modifies law 242 of 2016, the same one that regulates industrial hemp in Italy, adding the paragraph 3-bis in article 1 which cites: "The provisions of this law do not apply to the importation and marketing of hemp inflorescences for recreational use".

The second change concerns Article 4, to which it would be added paragraph 7-bis: "In case of violation of the provision referred to in Article 1, paragraph 3-bis, the provisions of the consolidated law on the regulation of narcotics and psychotropic substances, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the related states of drug addiction, referred to in the Presidential Decree of 9 October 1990, no. 309, shall apply".

Prohibitionism: the distinctive feature of the new government

As the entire world moves towards the legalization of cannabis, the new bill wants ban the recreational use of light cannabis and, in case of violations, refer to the consolidated law on narcotics.

Unfortunately though, like the old one law, this too wants to prohibit an activity that has never been authorized. In fact, preventing the importation and marketing of light cannabis for adult use, a consumption that has never been permitted, is legally impossible.

Furthermore, contrary to the theses fervently supported by prohibitionists, legalization does not encourage consumptionIndeed, it limits it. In fact, regulating a substance, in addition to removing that veil of prohibition that attracts many young people, makes it more difficult for minors to purchase it, who cannot access authorized sales premises.

Despite this, very serious episodes are repeating themselves in our peninsula. From the heavy searches during the three days of the fair at Canapa Mundi, to the inexplicable police raid on a school during an authorized debate on hemp.

A critical episode which inevitably raises the bar of repression, because it violates a sacred place for young people and, as underlined by the coordinator of Meglio Legale Antonella Soldo, "Institute assemblies are a right guaranteed by students, offer the opportunity to delve deeper into topics of general interest: today's raid is configured as a dangerous act of intimidation towards children who saw the police officers arriving in the serenity of the school classrooms".
