The so-called "high from passive smoking"Is it real? And if so, what are the possible consequences? A group of scholars from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore tried to answer this existential doubt.

The researchers set up a 12m2 plexiglass room, with ceilings about 2 meters high. After that, they chose as "guinea pigs" to be subjected to the experiment 12 adult subjects: six regular cannabis smokers and six who had never tried this substance.

The first six could smoke up to ten 1 gram joints of grass each, while the remaining six had to remain in the room breathing secondhand smoke.

To best highlight the results, they were carried out two tests 1 hour each. In the first case, while the six users puffed their cannabis, there was no exchange of air. In the second, however, clean air was circulated at regular intervals.

Cannabis and passive smoking: research results

Urine test

At the end of each test the individuals of both groups were analyzed and subjected to specific questionnaires to understand whether physiological and/or cognitive changes were detectable in passive subjects.

A sudden hunger

As expected, the greatest consequences of passive smoking were seen among non-smokers confined without a change of air. The data collected showed a modest increased heart rate and a notable one increased sense of appetite.

In conclusion, passive smoking did not alter the cognitive faculties of the subjects, but it stimulated one of the best known effects of marijuana consumption, the infamous munchies.

Urine test? Positive

The most unexpected surprise came with the urinalysis, to which the taxable subjects of the first block resulted positive, unlike the six participants in the air exchange experiment, whose urine showed no traces of THC metabolites.

A result that would lead to legal consequences that should not be underestimated since, as in the USA, so also in Italy, the most widespread method To check if a person is under the influence of cannabis, a urine test is used.

Fortunately, to help us, the cannabis community, after years of troubled research, has drawn up a series of valuable advice to be implemented in times of need.
