The Thai government wants to give away 1 million cannabis plants to citizens to celebrate the entry into force of the new law which legalizes self-production.

The law, approved last January 25, made Thailand the first Asian country to legalize the cultivation of cannabis for personal use.

From the post, launched on Facebook by the Minister of Health Anutin Charnvirakul, we read that with the new reform, which will come into force on June 9th, Thai citizens will be able to grow "all the cannabis plants they wish", as long as they are used for medical use.

For home cultivation, no official registration will be necessary, unlike the production of cannabis for commercial purposes. In fact, for sale you will need a permit to operate issued directly by Food And Drug Administration Thai.

In case of production for profit without authorization you will face one fine up to 20,000 baht (€543.33), however for selling without a permit, in addition to a fine of up to 300,000 baht (€8151.60), you will also risk up to three years in prison.

Charnvirakul added that entrepreneurs and companies will be able to compete freely on the Thai cannabis market. “This will allow people and government to generate more than 10 billion baht per year of revenue from marijuana and hemp.”
