In the United States the race for legalization continues. On May 25th Rhodes Island legalized marijuana for recreational use, becoming the 19th American state to regulate its consumption.

Recreational Marijuana in Rhode Island: What the Law Says

"The reality is that the ban does not stop consumption. Since Rhode Islanders can already access cannabis just across the state line or on the illicit market - QThis bill keeps revenue in Rhode Island and is as fair and equitable as possible." Here are the highlights of the law just signed:

  1. The sales for adult use will begin on December 1, 2022
  2. The majors of 21 years old they will be able to purchase and possess up to one ounce (28g) of marijuana
  3. Possession of up to two ounces will be considered one civil violation which will have no legal repercussions
  4. The possession limit allowed per household will be a maximum of 10 ounces (280g)
  5. The law immediately grants cultivation for personal use up to 6 plants, but underlines, 3 growing and 3 dried
  6. The new legislation allows up to 33 sales licenses retail distributed in six areas throughout the state, including the three current medical cannabis dispensaries that will be the first retailers
  7. It is granted to the courts until July 1, 2024 to automatically expunge past marijuana-related convictions, which meet the requirements of the newly signed law
