Eating of mango before smoking marijuana. Why is the cannabis community so fond of this sweet-smelling fruit? Rumor has it it can enhance its effects and raise our high. But let's find out what science says.
Cannabis and mango: a terpene bond
What links our beloved plant to this fruit? Cannabis produces over 100 terpenes, i.e. molecules that give the buds their characteristic aromas and flavors. Among these we remember the myrcene, a terpene present in large quantities in both marijuana and in the mango.
In one study, conducted by the Research Institute for Agroecology and Agriculture in Zurich, the terpene profiles of 16 different cannabis varieties were analyzed. The results showed that, among the samples examined, myrcene was the most common terpene.
Mango and cannabis: what do the studies say?
One study, published on British Journal of Pharmacology, identifies myrcene as a substance with important anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the data collected explains how it is a prominent terpene in cannabis and that, if combined with THC, could enhance its effects.
Some research from the 1970s even claims that myrcene can increase the permeability of human cells. Therefore, its intake through mango would help our body absorb THC effectively quicker and more direct amplifying its effects.
There is one to deny this theory study published on Cannabis and Cannabioinds Research. The researchers tested the six most common terpenes in cannabis, including myrcene, to conclude that: "None of the six terpenoids directly activated CB1 or CB2. These findings suggest that if a phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effect exists, it is not at the CB1 or CB2 receptor level."
This does not exclude that mango and cannabis can interact. Knowledge of the endocannabinoid system is simply still limited and synergy could occur for other routes that science has not yet identified.
When and why to eat mango

However, it doesn't hurt to try and eat a mango or so 60 or 90 minutes earlier to smoke marijuana, so that the body can absorb all the nutrients, or just after, it could prove to be the right choice and not only to improve our high.
After consuming some weed, the munchies it overwhelms us and the desire to swallow whatever arises becomes unstoppable. Often tempted by avalanches of junk food, preferring fresh fruit, especially mango, would be ideal.
Rich in vitamin A and with enormous benefits, one mango counts approximately 100 calories. Composed of 82% water and 12% fiber that we should consume daily, it will give us the right sense of satiety.
